CHAPTER 20

“Please just pull over for two minutes,” Harry grumbled to Jessica as he held his dislocated arm in his still functioning hand.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that,” Jessica answered. Sol could hear in her voice that she wanted to help the injured man, but knew it was imperative to get as far away from Tenebris’ soldiers as they could.

“Man… this burns a lot more than they say in the movies,” Harry winced as he cradled his arm and tried to lean back in his warped seat. “Why does it burn?”

Sol felt bad for the man, knowing he was attempting to make himself as comfortable as possible, and not being able to do so in the least.

“Boss,” he loudly mumbled over the wind. “I’m gonna need a vacation after this.”

“Heh,” Jessica actually let out a single laugh while slightly shaking her head. “You and me both.”

“I don’t fit on most rides,” Sol threw out.

“No shit,” Harry said over his shoulder, which made him wince at the movement.

Jessica glanced down at her phone that she had picked up off the floorboard after Harry had fallen on top of her, and took a turn down a dirt road without a street sign.

They drove between tightly packed trees that scraped against the large SUV, with some even reaching down into the new, wider sunroof, in an effort to smack Sol in the face. Closing his eyes, he let the branches do their worst rather than expend the energy needed to lift his hands to shield his head.

After about a mile, the SUV came into a clearing with a single old, rusted shipping container. Grass grew wildly around it, as if trying to swallow the metal intruder.

Jessica parked under a large tree with an expansive canopy, and turned the engine off before turning to regard Harry.

Through a series of oo’s and ah’s, he had somehow unfurled his left arm from around his neck, and found a comfortable enough position to rest at while he waited for his injuries to be addressed.

His dislocated arm rested on the center console while he leaned his body against the door.

Jessica hid her intentions as she slyly inspected Harry’s positioning.

Sol knew what was about to happen, and cringed as Jessica lunged for the dislocated arm, and yanked down and out on it.

There was a sickening crunch followed closely by incoherent vowels of rage and pain being screamed into the universe.

After three or four seconds, Harry stopped screaming, and looked down at his now pain-free appendage. He turned it over as he regarded it as if a prosthetic had replaced his flesh.

“Hmm,” Harry mused as he tested the limits of his mobility.

“What?” Jessica asked.

“Now that my shoulder isn’t on fire, my face and ribs really hurt.”

“Afraid there’s not much I can do about those,” Jessica said as she got out of the SUV, and examined their surroundings.

Harry gingerly did the same, windmilling his left arm as if in disbelief that the intense pain was truly gone.

“Little help?” Sol said with an eyeroll.
